Green Chemistry in Higher Education

Ecology wants to help professors and departments integrate green chemistry concepts into curriculum and academic research. Chemistry programs are a great start, but students in business, environmental science, public health, and other disciplines will also benefit from understanding green chemistry concepts.

We:

  • Help educators replace traditional lab chemicals with safer alternatives and create new experiments that illustrate green chemistry concepts.
  • Work with industry to recruit job applicants with green chemistry education.
  • Connect professors interested in green chemistry to industry examples and experts in the field.
  • Provide information on scholarships to conferences and other learning events for students and professors.
  • Share stories and examples of green chemistry in higher education in Washington.

Green chemistry webinars for educators

Beyond Benign offers a webinar series to help higher education integrate green chemistry into curriculum. Series topics are targeted to both general chemistry courses as well as organic chemistry and other advanced courses.

For a more introductory look at green chemistry, University of Oregon faculty Julie Haack and Jim Hutchison recorded a webinar describing the value of green chemistry to society and within education. Sign the Green Chemistry Commitment

The Green Chemistry Commitment is a project sponsored by Beyond Benign that unites colleges and universities to build support for green chemistry in education. Institutions that sign the commitment agree to progressively incorporate green chemistry theory and practice into their chemistry programs. Learn more or sign the commitment!

Green chemistry policy statement

The Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3) has developed a policy statement that declares a need for universities and colleges to ensure that science and engineering students understand concepts like toxicity, lifecycle impacts, and market drivers for hazardous waste generation. Ecology has signed this policy statement along with other companies, such as Dow Chemical Company, Hewlett-Packard, and Nike.
