14. Recycle as much as possible
15. Pick up all kinds of litter, including discarded diapers
16. Behave professionally at all times

Summer Youth Crew Applicants Must:

• Be 14 - 17 years old on the first day of employment. Proof of age is required.
• Be eligible to work in the United States.
• Have a Social Security card and photo identification.
• Submit one complete application by April 2, 2012.

Summer job applications will be accepted February 1 - April 2, 2012. Due to the large number of interested youth, applications received after these dates will NOT be considered or kept on file. Applications must be recieved in our office by the deadline date. (post-marked on the deadline date does not suffice)

The Southwest Region will be hiring 60 youth to staff 10 Ecology Youth Corps (EYC) road crews in the following locations:

• Aberdeen/Montesano
• Chehalis
• Lacey
• Puyallup
• Tacoma
• Vancouver

SALARY - How much will you earn?

The hourly wage is $9.04 per hour.

This session, crews work a total of 18 days, 7.5 hours each day.

If you work every day in your session, your total salary will be $1220 (BEFORE TAXES).

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours a day

What can I expect if I am hired?

• You will work 7.5 hours a day, 7:30 to 3:00, Monday thru Friday.
• You will receive two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch break per day.
• You will be insured by Labor and Industries for work related injuries.
• You will not receive medical benefits, paid holiday, sick, or vacation time.
• You are expected to work the entire session every day.
• You are responsible for your daily transportation to and from the crew meeting point. The supervisor will transport the crew from this meeting point to and from the job site and will remain with the crew throughout the day.
• Crew members are trained in proper safety procedures. Ecology provides gloves, hard hat, safety vest, protective eyewear, and EYC Program T-shirts, which must be worn at work. Ecology also furnishes all crew deployment equipment and safety attire EXCEPT footwear. Crew members are responsible for providing and wearing a pair of sturdy, hard-soled, over-the-ankle leather-type work boots and supplying their own rain gear.

What happens to your application?

• First, all late, incomplete, and disqualified applications are removed from consideration.

IMPORTANT: Every year hundreds of applications are disqualified because NO Teacher References were submitted. Don't let this happen to you! Be sure to include a Teacher Reference!

• Qualifying applications are entered into a computer database and sorted into groups by crew location.
• Postcards are mailed to applicants in late March and April confirming their application was accepted. (If you are NOT selected for an interview, this is the ONLY notice you will receive.)
• Former crew members, who have worked with EYC before, are automatically offered an interview, but they must submit an application.
• Letters are sent to those selected for an interview identifying WHEN, WHERE, and WHAT TIME their interview will be held.
• Interviews are held in late April and throughout May. Letters are sent to every person who participated in an interview, telling them if they were hired or not.
• Lastly, those hired attend a meeting in June (with a parent or legal guardian) to turn in hiring paperwork and learn more about the job.

NOTE: If you do not receive an interview notification letter, this means your application was not selected. We invite you to try again next year if you are still between the ages of 14 and 17.

HOW WE SELECT THOSE HIRED

We hire EYC crew members based on a combination of their application, interview score, and teacher references.

SAFETY TRAINING
Safety is our number one priority. All EYC employees receive extensive safety training before working on the road.

• Supervisors receive extensive training in first aid and CPR, hazardous materials recognition, highway safety procedures, defensive driving, and emergency preparedness.
• Crews are trained in safety procedures before and during their time on the road. Their first day on the job is spent learning safety procedures. The second day is an all-day safety and team training. Routine safety meetings are held weekly thereafter throughout duration of the season. In addition, the regional "crew-checker" regularly visits crews to ensure they are operating safely

Summer youth crews participate in several environmental education activities.

They will learn about sustainable living, global warming, waste reduction and recycling, and protecting Puget Sound. Additionally, a newsletter is generated for each session, and youth are encouraged to submit articles and stories.
