Back to Well Construction for Well Drillers

Dick Szymarek will be remembered, missed by many - by Linda Szymarek, in memory of her husband, Dick, state well drilling coordinator, Water Resources Program

Dick Szymarek passed away at our home on March 22. He kept his wonderful smile and sense of humor to the very end. The last 4 1/2 years of his life living with cancer was an inspirational journey for me, his family, friends and co-workers. His journey wasn’t always easy, yet he rarely ever showed it.
He will be remembered for his courage; his will to live, to love, and to give to others. I am truly grateful for all your prayers and support over the years.
If you would like to donate to your favorite charity, that would be wonderful.
Dick is survived by his two sons, Mark and Dave (wife Diana) and grand daughter Emma (11 months), all of Spokane.
Dick spent 23 years in the Armed Services. He joined the Air Force in 1969 and did several years of active duty during the Vietnam era when he served as a medic. He was stationed in England but made forays into the Vietnam War.
Later he joined the Army Reserves. He was called up for active duty in 1991 and spent six months in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War and its aftermath with the Corps of Engineers. He retired from the Reserves with the rank of major in 1997.
He also attended the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee where he studied ecology. He joined Ecology Water Resources Program in September 1980, where he worked initially in water rights adjudications. He was later appointed the statewide well drilling coordinator and served in that capacity for the remainder of his career.
Dick was an avid hunter, particularly bird hunting. He took up black powder rifles and was an accomplished wood worker. Dick and I enjoyed spending time around our waterfront home and the yard which we planned and took care of. He was especially fond of his Kubota yard tractor.

Have you ever wondered if Ecology received your Notice of Intent to drill that water or resource protection well? Have you ever wanted a list of drilling companies or licensed drillers in Washington State? As a driller, did you need to know how many CEUs you have and had to leave a message and wait for an Ecology staff person to call you back?

We have just released an internet version of our Well Construction and Licensing System. Just click on the link below. Its user friendly with an extensive help feature if you can’t find the information you’re looking for.

The first menu option will allow you to look up a Notice of Intent. Just enter the NOI number (starts with a W, R, E, S or A) and hit search. If it’s in the database, Ecology has received it!

The second menu option let’s you find currently licensed water and/or resource protection well drillers in Washington State.

The third menu option was made for drillers. This will allow a licensed driller to view his/her classes taken and ceus obtained, address info and more.

The last menu option let’s you find drilling companies that have drilled wells in the State of Washington. This is useful to a property owner if you would like to know which companies have drilled wells in your area. If you are a company owner, please be sure that the information listed is correct.

NOTE: If you want to know if a company has been licensed and insured, check with Labor and Industries. Ecology DOES NOT license and insure drilling companies, only individual well drillers.

Before CEUs may be assigned to a given course, the course must be evaluated.  It is a good idea to ask for course approval BEFORE taking a class. It may take some time to assign CEUs to a class, so don’t wait until the last minute to have your class evaluated.

There are a variety of courses that may be taken to satisfy continuing education requirements.  For more specific information click here (link to Continuing Education for Licensed Well Operators).

There are many classes that have been evaluated and assigned continuing education units and are listed (link to Continuing Education listing).

In order to evaluate a new class, we need to be able to answer the following questions.

  • How many hours was the class?

  • What was the class content?

  • What are the qualifications of the instructor?

To answer these questions, the following information must be gathered.

  • Class agenda

  • Class curriculum (outline) – for workshops and seminars this question might be answered in the course agenda.

  • Instructor biography – this should include the instructor’s experience, education and background.

There is also a form that the instructor may fill out that will satisfy these requirements.

After all necessary information has been obtained, please mail to Richard Szymarek at Washington State Department of Ecology, PO Box 47600, Olympia, WA 98504-7600.
