Ecology is Washington's principal environmental management agency and was created with authorization to adopt rules and regulations to fulfill the mandates of other environmental laws (Chapter 43.21A RCW).
As a cabinet level agency Ecology’s director is appointed by the governor with concurrence by the State Senate. Ecology carries out its mission through ten environmental programs plus the agency administration, employing 1,550 staff. The agency’s combined Operating and Capital Budget is divided among these programs and includes funds Ecology will pass through to other organizations, including local governments.
