The Department of Ecology (Ecology) asked the 2001 Legislature for funding to examine the future of waste. The Legislature agreed and directed Ecology to report back with an assessment of pollution-prevention and dangerous-waste policies and programs. This status report is intended to give a midpoint update in response to the Legislature.

This report:

  • discusses the history of state hazardous-waste management,
  • explores current trends in hazardous-waste generation,
  • proposes a vision for a preferred future,
  • explains the current state of Ecology′s hazardous-waste activities and
  • informs the Legislature about Ecology′s next steps.
