Abstract Long Description

Due to large file size, this document is divided into 4 parts for ease in downloading. See "related publications" for parts 2, 3 and 4.

Part 1 includes the introduction, table of contents, and the chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 1 is Estuary Formed -- Geology, an overview of the geology of Puget Sound and Padilla Bay. Chapter 2 is Estuary Settled -- Local History, a story of human culture and settlement around Padilla Bay from the first Native Americans to the present.

Part 2 includes chapters 3-5. Chapter 3 is Estuary Alive -- Ecology. It covers the biotic and abiotic elements of the Padilla Bay estuary and their interactions. Chapter 4, Estuary Inspired -- Literature and the Arts, discusses the aesthetic value of estuaries to artists and examines literature and art which has been influenced by these rich places. Chapter 5, Estuary Developed -- Human Uses, deals with the state of estuaries today and how human actions affect them.

Part 3 is a series of activities relating to estuaries. It includes:
