Short Description

On December 22, 1999 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published the 1999 Update of Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Ammonia (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1999) (hereinafter referred to as the 1999 Update). The new 1999 criteria are higher than the existing criteria values (WAC 173-201A-040) and, because of the emphasis placed on salmonids in regulatory decisions made in the Pacific Northwest, the 1999 Update criteria were evaluated to determine whether the increased criteria values posed any risk to salmonids. The evaluation was done within the context of a larger and more long-term process to revise the surface water standards for the state of Washington (WAC 173-201A). This publication includes the cover decision memorandum.
