Short Description

The Washington State Growth Management Act requires counties and cities to protect public drinking water supplies by protecting "areas with a critical effect on recharge." These areas are referred to as Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas. This document provides information about what Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas are and how to protect them.

The Washington State Dept. of Ecology Water Quality Program has updated the technical guidance for Critical Aquifer Recharge Areas. This publication was last updated in 2000 (publication No. 97-030). This update reflects more recent information and reference materials, and provides clarification where needed. This publication supercedes the Guidance Document for the Establishment of Critical Aquifer Recharge Area Ordinances by Kirk Cook, Washington State Department of Ecology, 2001, Publication No. 97-030, http://www.ecy.wa.gov/biblio/97030.html
