Publication Summary

Citizens can reduce toxic threats by changing what they buy and use in their homes. Before launching an outreach and education campaign, Ecology′s Hazardous Substance Information and Education Office (HSIEO) conducted a statewide survey to better understand citizen knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to lead and PBDEs, safer alternatives, and actions such as chemical bans and product labeling.

The survey yielded results by various demographics and geographic location, including Spanish-speaking respondents. Results indicate there is broad support for keeping toxic chemicals off the shelf and educating consumers. Results also indicate that price is not a barrier to finding safer alternatives and the internet and store clerks are primary sources of information.
