Computer modeling shows that lack of streamside shading is the number one cause of high stream temperatures. Warmer water holds less oxygen, speeds growth of algae, and makes salmonids more prone to disease. Tree borders keep water cool and also filter excessive sediment and fertilizers. Technology such as LIDAR and accurate aerial photos can help prioritize where trees for shading are needed most along streams. The poster was presented at the Puget Sound Model Open House at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture in Seattle on June 4, 2009. | |
