Short Description

Heavy metal contamination is a concern in Claypit Pond, a small (12 acre) lake 200 feet directly downstream from the Thermal Reduction Company, a municipal-scale incineration facility in Whatcom County. Ash from incineration is deposited on site. Claypit Pond was the site of a purported fish kill in 1979 (an age class of fish was missing from a sample taken in 1980) and relatively high heavy metal concentrations in water (Kittle 1980).
