Abstract Long Description

Ecology conducted a Class II inspection at the Weyerhaeuser pulp mill at Cosmopolis on May 23-25, 1988. The mill was meeting all effluent permit limits during the inspection. However, effluent toxicity was observed in pacific oyster (EC50 of 0.3 percent effluent) and mysid shrimp bioassays (LC50 of 58 percent effluent). Flouranthene concentrations in the effluent could account for the mysid mortalities. All other effluent organic concentrations were below acute water quality criteria. 4-Methylphenol, lead, nickel, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediment around the Weyerhaeuser outfall were mildly elevated compared to control sediments. Sediment samples showed no toxicity to the amphipod Rhepoxynius abronius.
