Regulatory assessments of adverse environmental impacts are frequently based on the monitoring of benthic invertebrates. These sediment-dwelling organisms, being sedentary, respond to both short-term acute and long-term chronic anthropogenic stresses at a single geographic point and are useful indicators of environmental conditions. | |
