Abstract Long Description

Unannounced Class II Inspections were conducted at nine municipal wastewater treatment plants in the Yakima River basin during September 14-23, 1992.

The most frequent problems, each occurring at about half the plants, were: - potential for chlorine toxicity in the receiving water; - potential for ammonia toxicity/nutrient enrichment in the receiving water; - wasteload to WWTP exceeds one or more design criteria; - potential for violation of weekly/monthly average fecal coliform counts; - flow measuring instrumentation needs calibration.

Several plant sites need better maintenance practices; several are understaffed. Two of the WWTPs have considerably more problems than the remaining seven, namely Zillah and Mabton. Six of the nine facilities inspected during this survey have wastewater discharge permits that are due for reissuance. The potential of receiving water toxicity and plant overloading are two issues which should be addressed in revised permits, specifically by requiring mixing zone evaluations and planning for plant upgrades.
