Short Description

This report is a result of Washington State Executive Request 1998 legislation (SSB 6474), The Fertilizer Regulation Act, mandating a study of dioxins in fertilizers, soil amendments, and soils. With support from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant, the Washington State Department of Ecology also studied metals in fertilizers, soil amendments, and soils. The results from these studies are included in this report.

Abstract Long Description

This report is a result of Washington State Executive Request 1998 legislation (SSB 6474), The Fertilizer Regulation Act, mandating a study of dioxins in fertilizers, soil amendments, and soils. With support from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) also studied metals in fertilizers, soil amendments, and soils. The results from these studies are included in this report.

Objectives of the studies included: 1. Quantify metal and dioxin concentrations in fertilizer products 2. Determine if certain metals have accumulated in agricultural soils of the Columbia Basin 3. Provide an initial assessment of typical concentrations of dioxins in Washington soils

To satisfy these objectives, Ecology, in cooperation with the state Department of Agriculture and the state Department of Health: 1. Sampled fertilizer products to determine metal and dioxin concentrations 2. Analyzed metal concentrations of agricultural and non-agricultural soils in the Columbia Basin 3. Sampled soils in open, forest, and urban areas for dioxins

Studies included: 1. Metals and Dioxins in Fertilizer Products 2. Metals in Soils 3. Dioxins in Soils
