Toxics Release Inventory Display SystemThe Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) was enacted by the United States Congress in 1986. Under EPCRA Section 313 certain businesses are required to annually report the amounts of toxic chemicals their facilities release into the environment in the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report. EPCRA requires the US EPA and the states to annually collect data on releases and transfers of certain toxic chemicals from industrial facilities and make the data available to the public. TRI reports are submitted to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), state and tribal governments. This data is available online in a publicly accessible national TRI database. This vast source of data is a powerful tool for environmental improvement. To view the TRI data in a user friendly fashion, Ecology and EPA created the Toxics Release Inventory Display System (TRIDS) software. TRIDS displays a given state’s releases of toxic chemicals into the air, land, water, sewers and/or moved off-site within a given year. Both the TRI data and TRIDS are intended to be used by federal, state, local and tribal governments as well as a broad sector of the public including schools, communities, environmental organizations, and business groups.
