Ecology is encouraging all hospitals in Washington State to become Partners for Change and establish their own mercury- and waste-reduction goals. Ecology’s Technical Assistance team can help establish goals and identify opportunities for reductions.
Ecology won the 2006 H2E Champion for Change award for the development of the Best Management Practices guide for hospitals and work with the hospital sector. As a Champion for Change, Ecology will provide technical assistance to all hospitals in Washington State to eliminate mercury and reduce total waste volumes.
Since 1998, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have worked together under Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) to help hospitals improve environmental performance by eliminating mercury and reducing waste.
H2E is a voluntary organization that helps health-care facilities improve safety, reduce waste and waste-disposal costs, and become better environmental stewards. Hospitals can sign up as Partners for Change and pledge to virtually eliminate mercury in their hospitals and reduce total waste volumes. Washington State currently has 19 Partner Hospitals.
