Mercury Measures - Core Sampling at Lake Sammamish

Lake Sammamish received large mercury fluxes during the 1940s.  Puget Sound’s rapid population and industry growth during the World War II years likely contributed to the flux rates. Since the 1940s, mercury levels in Lake Sammamish have steadily decreased.

Sources to the lake include the global reservoir and Puget Sound air releases.  Neighboring Lake Washington exhibited similar mercury contamination patterns in a separate coring study (Van Metre, 2004).
