Incinerators can vaporize mercury. What gets into the atmosphere deposits on land and water, where some of it is turned to methylmercury and enters the food chain. Incinerators include garbage incinerators, medical-waste incinerators, as well as crematoria.
Recent efforts to limit this source include partnerships with hospitals and clinics to keep medical waste as close to mercury free as possible and more stringent smokestack controls. Efforts to limit mercury in sewage sludge assist in limiting mercury from biosolids incineration.
