The Mercury Thermostat Recycling Program

The Washington Mercury Education and Reduction Act of 2003 banned all mercury-containing thermostats that are not made by companies participating in a recognized recovery/recycling program. The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), a non-profit subsidiary of the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association, has sponsored thermostat recycling in Washington state since 2003.Round mercury thermostats often look like this model. Except for do-it-yourselfers, only licensed electricians are authorized to remove electric mercury thermostats.

Electricians

Please protect your environment, your neighbors and your family by recycling, keeping mercury thermostats out of the trash. You can take thermostats to an HVAC equipment wholesaler near you or to a local household hazardous facility. If your wholesaler is not participating in this program, please contact us.

Do-It-Yourselfers

If you remove or change out an old mercury thermostat, please keep it out of the trash. See or call 1-800-RECYCLE (1-800-732-9253) to find out where to take your old thermostat.
