TWO MEETINGS PLANNED ON OIL SPILL DAMAGE

OLYMPIA -- Two meetings will be held in October to discuss compensation for damages done to the environment by oil spills.

The Washington Resource Damage Assessment (RDA) Committee will hold a special meeting on Monday, October 23, at 9 a.m. in Room 2S-21 at the Department of Ecology headquarters building located at 300 Desmond Drive in Lacey. This interagency committee evaluates spills and determines the most appropriate method for assessing natural resource damages.

The main purpose of the meeting is to discuss the appropriate resource damage assessment method to use for several recent oil spills. The RDA Committee will also discuss approval of a completed restoration project for a 1993 oil spill in Keyport, Wash. In addition, the Committee will hold a closed door executive session to discuss several outstanding litigation-sensitive damage assessments. An earlier meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, has been canceled.

The Washington Coastal Protection Fund Steering Committee will meet on Friday, October 13, to discuss proposals received for restoration of resources affected by the 1993 Nosac Forest oil spill. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in Room 1D-17 at the Ecology headquarters building, 300 Desmond Drive, Lacey. This interagency committee is responsible for managing money deposited to the Coastal Protection Fund from state resource damage assessment actions and how these funds should be spent on restoration projects and studies.
