OCTOBER IS NATIONAL CAR CARE MONTH
OLYMPIA, WA -- Is your motor vehicle running efficiently or is it contributing excessively to air pollution? In recognition of National Car Care Month, the Department of Ecology's Air Quality Program will be offering its second annual free motor vehicle emission check to Thurston county residents on October 21, at South Sound Center in Lacey, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free-of-charge inspection will give motorists a report on vehicle emissions. This information helps indicate the overall health of a vehicle's engine. Technicians will check the levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in vehicle exhaust and interpret the results. A clean running engine saves money on gas and repairs and reduces air pollution.
Vehicle emissions make up 55 percent of air pollutants in Washington. Excessive levels of vehicle emissions can threaten human health.
Motorists taking the free test should drive their vehicles 10 minutes on the freeway prior to the inspection to ensure that all engine components are at proper operating temperature. If there is a line, leave the engine running unless otherwise instructed. Information also will be available from Intercity Transit on transportation alternatives to the single occupancy vehicle. Several local repair shops will provide technicians to assist with the testing.
For more information call Ann Butler at (360) 407-6334. National Car Care Month is a cooperative effort, coordinated by the non-profit Car Care Council, the automotive industry, local, state and federal government agencies, and other concerned citizens.
