ECOLOGY AWARDS FINAL $432,570 GRANT FOR KENT HIGHLANDS LANDFILL

The Washington Department of Ecology has awarded a $432,570 grant to the City of Seattle to operate and maintain the permanent cleanup systems at the Kent Highlands Landfill, according to Ecology Director Mary Riveland.

The grant will cover some of the costs for the first year of operating and maintaining the gas and leachate collection systems, sampling and testing the groundwater, and maintaining the roads and equipment. Only the first year of operations and maintenance is eligible for grant funding.

Seattle operated the Kent Highlands Landfill as a municipal landfill from 1968 until 1986. Ecology investigated the site after the city stopped using it and in 1987 Seattle agreed to a multiphase cleanup program. Ecology has provided $5,634,908 in grants for previous phases of the cleanup.

The grant will cover up to 40 percent of the operation and maintenance costs eligible for grant funding. The funds come from Ecology's local toxics control account, money generated by state taxes on toxic substances.
