ECOLOGY AWARDS $432,375 GRANT FOR PORT OF PASCO CLEANUP
The Washington Department of Ecology has awarded a $432,375 grant to the Port of Pasco to begin cleaning up contamination at the port, according to Ecology Director Mary Riveland.
The port site is contaminated from petroleum and agricultural chemicals that have been stored there. The grant covers some of the costs of removing several aboveground storage tanks, recovering petroleum from the area, studying feasible cleanup methods for the site, preparing a cleanup action plan, and administering the project. The results of the feasibility study will be used in determining what will be done to permanently clean up the site.
A remedial investigation done earlier this year showed that the contamination extends farther than originally thought. Because of this, the port may also use grant funds to help purchase additional property in the contaminated area.
The grant covers approximately 75 percent of the costs eligible for grant funding. The funds come from Ecology's local toxics control account, money generated by state taxes on toxic substances.
