ECOLOGY AWARDS $533,833 GRANT FOR FOSS WATERWAY SITE CLEANUP
The Washington Department of Ecology has awarded a $533,833 grant to the City of Tacoma to clean up the Morris/Leonard site on the Thea Foss Waterway, according to Ecology Director Mary Riveland.
The grant will cover some of the costs of removing contaminated soil at the site on the west side of the Thea Foss Waterway. The more highly contaminated soils will be disposed of, while the less contaminated soils will be used as fill or cover at the Tacoma Landfill. The Morris/Leonard site is also known as Parcel 7. It is contaminated with petroleum, mostly from old spills of heating oil.
The Morris/Leonard property is the first to be cleaned up under the Foss Upland Properties Consent Decree. This agreement, among Tacoma, the Department of Ecology and the Metropolitan Park District, covers publicly owned properties along the Foss Waterway.
The grant will cover approximately 40 percent of the costs eligible for grant funding. The funds come from Ecology's local toxics control account, money generated by state taxes on toxic substances.
