YAKIMA BOTTLED WATER PROGRAM EXPANDED TO 9TH AVENUE

OLYMPIA -- Yakima residents living on 9th Avenue between Washington and Mead who use private drinking water wells are being encouraged to sign up for a free bottled water program.

"The program is part of our ongoing efforts to provide clean drinking water to Yakima Railroad Area residents, and to characterize the extent of ground water contamination area-wide,” said Rick Roeder, site manager for the Yakima Railroad Area.

Perchloroethylene (PCE), a solvent and cleaning agent used in dry cleaning, pesticide formulation, machine shops and other industrial practices, has been detected in wells within the Yakima Railroad Area. The area is located in the heart of downtown Yakima and Union Gap and covers about six square miles.

A group of local businesses involved in the Yakima Railroad Area site investigation work is paying for, and operating the program under Ecology oversight. Each eligible household will receive two free bottles of water a month for each person living at the residence. The free supply of water will continue until households can connect to city water, scheduled for Spring 1996.

Households on 9th Avenue will receive a request form this week to sign up for the bottled water. Residents can also call Rick Roeder at Ecology’s Central Regional Office at (509) 454-7837 or Margaret Arnold who is coordinating the sign-up at 1-800-205-7554 for more information about the program.
