Ecology Requests Facility Owner To Take Action Following Release

Olympia, WA -- Washington State Department of Ecology officials are requesting the owner of Shar-on Gas in Goldendale to prevent potential hazards to neighboring homes and businesses from a petroleum release from an underground storage tank.

Gasoline vapors at potentially flammable levels were present in sewer lines, homes and businesses when a release was discovered on November 29. The exact source and the extent of the release is not yet known. Ecology inspectors did a follow-up investigation on December 12 and found gasoline vapors still present in soil being excavated at the facility - posing a threat to public health and the environment.

There are more than 6,500 contaminated sites in Washington State. Nearly 5,000 of them are a result of an underground storage tank release.
