Ecology, Transportation Settle Penalty and Agree to Training

Ecology and the State Department of Transportation have settled a $12,500 penalty issued to the Transportation Department last February for a discharge of oil into the Thea Foss Waterway, and failure to properly report the spill. The Transportation Department agreed to pay a $2,000 penalty to Ecology and train 100 construction project staff in the Seattle-Tacoma area in how to identify, prevent and respond to spills during road construction.

Ecology Grant of $13,900 Aids Enumclaw Waste Prevention and Recycling

Ecology has given a $13,900 grant to Enumclaw to help with waste prevention and recycling programs for businesses and homes. The grant will cover some of the costs of Enumclaw's waste consultation and education program for businesses, and produce a waste prevention and recycling reference booklet for homes. The city hopes the programs will reduce the business waste stream by 20 percent, and increase households' participation in waste reduction and recycling by 15 percent.

Ecology Awards $118,781 in Grants for Lincoln County Waste Projects

Ecology has awarded grants totaling $118,781 to Lincoln County for a comprehensive program of waste management projects. The county will use an $88,782 grant to support projects to collect and dispose of household hazardous waste, and to educate residents about alternatives to hazardous products and safe handling and disposal. The county will also use the grant to provide waste reduction and recycling education, and to evaluate existing recycling activities. A $29,999 grant will support the county's work in enforcing solid waste laws, including inspecting facilities, issuing permits and investigating illegal dumping.

Ecology Grants $1,116,744 To Aid Pierce County Area Waste Projects

Ecology has awarded grants totaling $1,116,744 to Pierce County and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department for a coordinated program of waste management projects. Pierce County will use an $836,744 grant to educate students and adults about waste reduction and recycling, to collect and dispose of household hazardous waste, and to update the local solid and hazardous waste management plans. The health department will use a $210,000 grant to maintain public education efforts about hazardous waste, to provide technical assistance for businesses that generate small quantities of hazardous waste, and to work with the county on the hazardous waste plan update. The health department will also use a $70,000 grant to enforce solid waste laws, inspecting facilities and investigating illegal dumping and old landfill sites.
