Royal City Awarded $202,000 Loan To Improve Water Quality

Spokane, WA - Royal City has received a loan of $202,000 to design a new water reclamation facility. The Washington State Department of Ecology awarded the loan from the Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund. The fund provides federal and state funding in the form of low-interest loans to local governments to improve and protect water quality.

"Royal City plans to replace the city's existing wastewater lagoon and land treatment system with the new water reclamation facility," said Janice Roderick, Ecology's project manager. "The water reclamation facility will generate water suitable for local reuse opportunities. The city is still exploring what form of reuse is most appropriate locally."

Royal City's project is one of several water reuse projects targeted for funding by the Legislature.

Royal City is a participant in Ecology's Small Towns Environment Program (STEP). The STEP program is designed to reduce the costs of waste water treatment projects through community participation and the use of volunteers. The city is reviewing its plans to see how to save money using volunteers. City officials are hoping to save several hundred thousand dollars through volunteer efforts that might include tasks such as preparing the site for construction.
