OLYMPIA, WA - The Department of Ecology is seeking information from anyone who may have information about the illegal dumping of two 5-gallon propane tanks on Rainer Road in Thurston County. The tanks contain an acid gas commonly used in the production of methamphetamines.
The modified tanks were dumped by the east side of Rainer Rd. between Spurgeon Creek Rd. and Military Rd. some time during the past few weeks. Because the tanks posed a direct threat to the public and the environment, Ecology spill responders from the Southwest Regional Office de-pressurized the cylinders and properly disposed of the highly acidic waste material. State funds were used to pay for the response and disposal.
Anyone who may have information about the incident or saw the tanks being left by the side of the road should call Ecology's 24-hour spill reporting line at (360) 407-6300.
Chemicals and wastes that are improperly disposed can pollute streams and rivers, contaminate ground water and pose a health and safety hazard to people and wildlife. During the past few years, the illegal manufacture of methamphetamines has increased dramatically in Thurston County and Southwest Washington.
Citizens should call local law enforcement or Ecology immediately if they see suspicious dumpsites containing propane cylinders and/or chemicals.
