OLYMPIA - The Department of Ecology (Ecology) has supplemented its toll-free hotline, 800-RECYCLE, with an online version that will make it even easier for consumers to find places to take their recyclable materials.
The telephone version of the hotline has been in existence for 22 years, providing information about recycling opportunities around the state and answering questions about recycling and household hazardous wastes.
"The hotline continues to be a great way for consumers to learn about how and where to recycle," said Jay Shepard, Manager of the headquarters section within Ecology's Solid Waste Program. But he noted that it's available only during regular business hours. "Now, through the Internet, people have access to a lot of information any time they want it."
Three years ago, Ecology's solid-waste program began making portions of its sophisticated recycling database available through the Internet at the Solid Waste Website. The new system, located at http://1800recycle.wa.gov, has interactive Web pages. Users can interact directly with the database, which is updated continuously.
Users can ask recycling questions based on the specific materials they have and where they live. It is a convenient, one-stop place to get all recycling information.
The interactive system lets a user enter his or her county name and the material to be recycled, and then he or she receives current facility information. This online system can help users bring bottles, cans, paper, appliances, used motor oil, construction and demolition waste, plastics, laser cartridges, tires, Styrofoam, and household hazardous wastes to the appropriate location for recycling.
800-Recycle Online provides information in 10 general categories, for 100 specific materials listed, and even provides maps that can be printed out to help find the locations.
