CONTACT: Caitlin Cormier, Department of Ecology, 360-407-6149SEATTLE - Gov. Gary Locke has proclaimed Sunday, Nov. 15, as "America Recycles Day" in Washington state.
On that day, events will be held across the state and the nation to help raise consumer awareness about closing the recycling loop through purchasing products and packaging made from recycled materials.
To kick things off in Washington, there will be a rally to get ready for America Recycles Day - Washington, on Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The Home Depot, 1335 North 205th St., Seattle. This year's theme is, "If you're not buying recycled, you're not really recycling."
Featured events on Nov. 7 are a special appearance by Seattle Seahawk Matt LaBounty; live rock 'n' blues music by Dynamo Hum; entertainment by the "Recyclettes"; and kids' workshops held by The Home Depot.
Amid the displays of recycled products, there will be contests for children and adults. By pledging to step up their efforts to be more aware, recycle more and buy recycled-material products, adults will be entered into a contest to win the $200,000 American Green Dream House, which will be constructed with recycled materials.
For those under 18, their pledges will enter them in a drawing for a Walt Disney World trip.
America Recycles Day, and the Washington Kick Off on Nov. 7, is being organized by a public-private partnership, members of which are from the University of Washington, the Dept. of Ecology, the King County Commission for Marketing Recyclable Materials, Washington Citizens for Resource Conservation, Washington State Recycling Association, and the Business and Industry Recycling Venture.
Sponsors for the kick-off event are Seafirst Bank and the King County Department of Natural Resources. Co-sponsors are Cedar Grove Compost, CONNECT! Corporation, The Home Depot, Impression Printing, NAPCOR, Seattle Seahawks, Snohomish County, Tetra Pak, Inc. and the Washington Refuse and Recycling Association.
The public is welcome to attend the kick-off event and to browse Washington's America Recycles Day Web site at http://www.americarecyclesday.wa.org to get more information about recycling, purchasing wisely and how to win the American Green Dream House.
