OLYMPIA - In an effort to temporarily curb the threat of winter erosion caused by the Pacific Ocean, Ocean Shores is currently constructing removable "geotubes" on the primary dune at the north jetty of Grays Harbor.
The geotubes are plastic, sand-filled tubes that are reinforced with conveyor-belt material to ward off punctures. They will be imbedded along 540 feet of the primary dune.
The stop-gap measure is an effort to prevent a breach in the dune that could flood Ocean Shores Boulevard and the city's water and sewer lines that are located in the utility corridor next to it.
The construction is being timed to coincide with a series of low tides.
NOTE DATE CHANGE: Weather and ocean conditions permitting, news organizations are invited to observe construction and gather interviews at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10. To confirm, call Sandy Howard at (360) 407-6239 before 5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 9.
DIRECTIONS TO THE SITE: From Hoquiam, take State Route 109 to Ocean Shores. Travel through the main town and head south on Ocean Shores Boulevard. The primary dune at the north jetty is on the right before reaching the North Jetty State Park. State agency and city representatives will be on site for interviews.
