A public meeting is slated for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, to address a proposal by the Ahtanum Irrigation District to construct a retainment dam and water storage reservoir at Pine Hollow, near the communities of Wiley City and Tampico. The meeting will be held at the Central Regional Office, Department of Ecology, 15 W. Yakima Ave., Suite 200, Yakima, WA, second-floor conference room.
The 1998 Legislature provided $300,000, with an equal cash match from the Ahtanum Irrigation District, to conduct a pre-construction analysis of the Pine Hollow site to be completed by June 30, 1999. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the suitability of the Pine Hollow site for a dam and reservoir and to determine the project’s potential to store water for agriculture and to enhance and maintain anadromous fish and other aquatic life.
Hydrologic and water rights assessments of the Ahtanum Creek watershed, Yakama Indian Nation water rights and other water rights will be analyzed to determine water availability. Analysis of the geology and hydrogeology of the site, and conceptual dam layout, type sizing and dynamics also will be considered.
The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public about the proposed project, to take public comment on the scope of the project and to answer questions about the project proposal and analysis.
