News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Aug. 12, 1999

99-159

To: News editors and reporters
From: Sheryl Hutchison, Director , Office of Communication & Education Phone: 360-407-7004
Subject: Quarterly Enforcement Summary

The Department of Ecology has a policy of notifying reporters about all penalties we issue that total $1,000 or more. For significant penalties of $10,000 or more, you are notified right away via news release. Smaller penalties have been brought to your attention by phone or letter through your nearest regional Ecology office. Unfortunately, the notification process for these smaller penalties has not worked as well as we'd like, so we are going to try something different.

We will continue to issue news releases immediately about penalties that total $10,000 or more. We also will send news releases when we issue smaller penalties if the violation received public and/or media attention at the time it occurred. (Essentially, this will help you "close the loop" on those stories.) Then, every three months, we will issue a roundup of all penalties greater than $1,000.

The summary below includes all penalties of $1,000 or more by Ecology during the second quarter of this year (April - June). We hope you find this useful and we welcome your inquiries to localize these stories. To follow up, please call the public information officer who covers the county in which the violation occurred.
