Rock-crushing company settles with Ecology

YAKIMA - An Idaho sand- and gravel-mining company has reached a settlement with the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) for air-quality permit violations at several Eastern Washington rock-crushing sites.

DeAtley Company Inc., of Lewiston, Idaho, has paid a civil penalty of $7,000 for failing to control dust emissions at gravel pits in Klickitat county in 1996 and 1997.

In July 1998, the company was issued a $24,000 civil penalty for violations at four gravel pits in Klickitat, Lincoln and Asotin counties. In response to the company's application for relief from the penalty, some violations were dropped and the penalty was reduced to $11,000 in April 1999. DeAtley then appealed the penalty and a settlement was reached in October.

State law requires that reasonable precautions be taken at gravel pits and construction projects to prevent dust from becoming airborne and to minimize emissions.
