SPOKANE - A severe aquatic weed problem, including the invasion of Eurasian watermilfoil on Eloika Lake, will be discussed at a public meeting Thursday, Aug. 17, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Riverside High School in Chatteroy. The school is located at 4120 E. Deer Park/ Milan Rd.
Residents can learn more about the lake and its aquatic weed over-growth at the meeting, sponsored by the state Department of Ecology (Ecology). They can also learn about the tools and resources available to control the weed population.
Eurasian watermilfoil is of particular concern because it is a rapidly growing weed that can literally take over a lake. It harms the environment for fish and makes recreation more difficult and dangerous. Boat props and even swimmers can easily get tangled in the thick mats of weeds.
"Eloika Lake has a severe weed problem. Our goal is to inform the lake's residents about the options and tools that are available to them to gain some control over the weed growth so they can more fully enjoy the lake," said Nancy Weller with Ecology's Spokane office.
Ecology experts will review the current condition of the lake and discuss eradication methods such as mechanical and chemical treatments. They also will describe sources of technical and financial assistance available through Ecology.
