YAKIMA - "Real time" air-quality information is now available to Wenatchee Valley residents by logging on to an Internet site managed by the Washington State Department of Ecology.
Air sampling equipment has been re-installed at Columbia Elementary School, where it continuously measures small pollution particles in the air. Results from the sampler are transmitted via telephone lines, and the data are available almost immediately at https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/enviwa/. (Link updated 01/18/07)
"We're glad that we're able to get air quality monitoring up and running again in the Wenatchee Valley," said Sue Billings, air quality manager for Central Washington. "We will keep these samplers running as long as our funding and resources allow."
The air sampler measures small pollution particles, known as PM10 particles -- one form of air pollution monitored nationwide. Smoke and dust are examples of particulate air pollution.
In addition to the automated sampler, manual air samples will continue to be taken every few days at Columbia School. The manual data are subjected to a more rigorous validation regimen and thus help corroborate results from the automated sampler.
