OLYMPIA -- Washington's motor-vehicle Emission Check stations will be closed Wednesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
The 20 stations are located in Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane counties.
Regular operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except holidays.
The stations are privately owned and operated under a state contract.
Inspections identify vehicles with excessive tailpipe emissions so they can be serviced. Repairs to these cars, trucks and buses reduce vehicle emissions as a whole by 20 percent and help the Puget Sound, Spokane and Portland-Vancouver regions meet national clean-air standards.
