Franklin County slaughter operator earns environmental award

SPOKANE - Bud McCary, owner of McCary Country Meats, will be recognized tomorrow for working to protect the environment by improving how wastewater is managed at the Basin City slaughterhouse.

The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) will present McCary with an environmental excellence award during an open house Friday at the facility at 21981 N. Glade Road, one-half mile south of Basin City, near Road 170. The presentation will be at 11 a.m. The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

McCary has renovated the slaughterhouse he has operated since 1967 and installed a state-of-the art system to handle wastewater from washing down the slaughterhouse floor and equipment. He added a lagoon system to store the wastewater in the winter, with a lining that protects underground water from contamination. During the rest of the year, the wastewater is applied to adjacent land.

"McCary's wastewater facilities are superior to other operations like this is Eastern Washington," said Tony Grover, Ecology's eastern region director. "Throughout the process he has always wanted to do what's right. Even though the facilities are costly to install, he realized it was in his benefit to ensure the discharge would not harm the environment."

"We did almost all the work ourselves and saved a lot of money that way," McCary said. "I wanted to do it right because I live here. I don't want to do anything that would hurt this community."
