Longview-area farmer settles Dept. of Ecology fine

OLYMPIA - A Longview-area farmer has settled a $10,000 penalty he received in 1999 for allowing farm manure to get into a wetland and a slough that drain into the Columbia River.

Under the settlement with the state Department of Ecology (Ecology), the farm owner, Pete Van Grinsven, has agreed to establish barriers to keep livestock and livestock manure from polluting nearby waters. He will develop an animal waste plan, approved by the Cowlitz County Conservation District and Ecology, if he chooses to have more than four farm animals or more than 20 chickens on his property at the same time.

In addition, Van Grinsven will pay $1,000 to the state.

Van Grinsven earlier removed a large number of animals from his farm because he chose not to develop an animal waste plan.

The farm is located on Willow Grove Road in Longview.
