Grants available for teachers to educate kids about clean water

OLYMPIA - Washington students could learn how to measure the flow of water, test for pollutants and to restore salmon and aquatic habitat with the help of Magic Apple grants from the Department of Ecology.

The agency is encouraging elementary, junior high/middle school or high school teachers at public, private or vocational institutions to apply for the grants to promote learning about clean water.

"Every generation has to step forward and do its part to protect our water," said Ecology Director Tom Fitzsimmons. "These grants promote that sense of stewardship and increase students' knowledge about how to make good choices to prevent pollution from getting into our lakes and streams."

Funding for the grants comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which provides the money to the state Department of Ecology to issue to teachers. Grants valued at $750 each will be provided to approximately nine teachers.

Teachers may get applications from the Department of Ecology's Web site at http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/nonpoint/magicapple.html or by contacting Annie Phillips at aphi461@ecy.wa.gov or 360-407-6408. Applications must be sent to Annie Phillips, Department of Ecology, P.O. Box 47600, Olympia, Wash., 98504-7600, by March 1, 2002.

Educators from state and federal agencies will help Ecology select the winning applications. The projects will be rated based on innovation; how well they will integrate environmental education into traditional subjects such as language arts, social studies and math; fostering and promoting environmental education efforts by other teachers, citizens or the local community; and promoting students' stewardship ethic for protecting natural resources.

Ecology will announce the winning applications in the spring.
