Air quality monitored in 'real time' in Pullman and Ritzville area

SPOKANE - "Real time" air-quality information is now available to both Pullman and Ritzville area residents by logging on to an Internet site managed by the Washington State Department of Ecology.

The air sampler continuously measures small pollution particles in the air known as PM2.5 particles. Results from the sampler are transmitted via telephone lines, and the data are available almost immediately at https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/enviwa/. (Link updated 01/18/08))

PM 2.5 particles are a form of air pollution caused primarily by smoke and other combustion sources and can cause health problems for those with respiratory illness as well as for the very young and elderly.

"We hope this additional air quality data will not only inform citizens, but also empower them," said Grant Pfeifer, the air quality manager in Ecology's eastern region. "As people learn more about their air quality, they can make better decisions about activities that contribute to air pollution in the first place."

The information available on this website is considered un-validated until it undergoes a rigorous quality assurance testing.
