Water monitoring sites announced
OLYMPIA - School groups, community groups and private citizens will help test
the quality of water in lakes, streams and marine waters throughout Washington
as part of National Water Monitoring Day on Friday, Oct. 18.
The monitoring efforts, part of a nationwide celebration of the 30th
anniversary of the federal Clean Water Act, are intended to raise public
awareness about the importance of clean water.
As of Oct. 11, almost 1,800 groups of monitors had volunteered to participate
in this nationwide effort, including more than 130 groups in Washington state.
To find local sampling events, reporters should contact coordinators in their

- BURIEN: Students and adults will be monitoring at Seacrest Park in the

- CHEHALIS BASIN: Rob Schanz will lead a monitoring event involving several
classrooms from the Chehalis Basin, at Rainbow Falls State Park. Contact:

- CHEWELAH: A class from Jenkins High School will monitor at the Seven Bays in
Lake Roosevelt - maybe from a floating classroom. Contact: Jim Biancardi

- LYNDEN: Harlan Kredit, a science teacher at Lynden Christian School, will
take his class to monitor Fishtrap Creek. Contact: 360-318-9525
- SEATTLE: Nancy Malmgren will bring about 10 home-schooled children to
monitor Pipers Creek. Contact: 206-363-4116
- SEATTLE: St. George School will be testing in Lake Washington at Seward
Park. Contact: 206-762-0656
- SNOHOMISH COUNTY: Heidi Reynolds, coordinator of the Snohomish County Lakes
Citizen Monitoring Program, will work with adults in boats to measure the
clarity of local lakes. Contact: 425-388-3464, ext. 46.
- SNOHOMISH COUNTY:Matt Loper, Shoreline Community College, will be
monitoring with a student at Boeing Creek. Contact: 206-546-4683
- SPOKANE COUNTY: Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will monitor 13
sites in the Spokane area. Contact: 509-344-7787.
- SPOKANE COUNTY: West Valley School District's Outdoor Learning Center is
coordinating some monitoring activities. Contact: Jami Ostby at 509-340-1028.
- YAKIMA: Ron Hicks, a farmer who lives at 1123 Pomona Rd. in Yakima, will
test his own river frontage. Contact: 509-469-6823
