OLYMPIA - Have you ever wondered what construction companies do with surplus supplies or what demolition contractors do with perfectly useful items in buildings scheduled to be torn down? And what can you do about the sofa or leftover decking cluttering up your garage?
In the past, the landfill was the answer. But besides being costly, the landfill isn't necessary for re-usable items.
The state Department of Ecology and its participating city and county partners have a solution and it's as easy as surfing the Web.
The www.2good2toss.com Web site is the place to go to find new and re-usable construction materials and large household items.
Save that still serviceable refrigerator from the landfill and find it a home. Locate the wallboard you need to finish your basement. And do it for free!
"Think of it as an online garage sale, where the valuable items are free or low cost," said Shelly McClure, who coordinates the online-exchange project for Ecology. "The site is a way to link the whole state as a community that benefits from extending the useful life of items and throwing less away."
The ability to post to the www.2good2toss.com site is limited to people within the participating counties and cities, but anyone can browse the site and contact owners directly to make transaction and pick-up arrangements.
"We are very excited about this project and have items being posted by construction companies, re-use stores, demolition contractors and citizens every day," said McClure. "We hope people will check the new site often. They'll find bargains and all of us will save landfill space."
There is no restriction on counties and cities joining at any time. Currently, participants include Clark, Columbia, Grays Harbor, King, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Thurston, Skagit, Snohomish and Walla Walla counties, as well as the cities of Richland, Shelton, Tacoma and Vancouver.
