Developer settles environmental fine

OLYMPIA - A developer from Vancouver has agreed to pay $35,000 for allowing sediment-laden water to drain into sensitive wetlands and a stream at Parkview Trails in Battle Ground.

Excessive sediments in the water can clog fish gills, cover spawning beds and harm other aquatic life. Mill Creek is home to threatened steelhead trout and chum salmon.

Mike DeFrees, owner of Columbia Rim Construction, originally was fined $40,000.

The fine was issued by the Department of Ecology in June 2002 and covered several water-quality violations in 2001 and 2002. The settlement was signed on Oct. 3.

Parkview Trails is located at Northwest 20th Avenue.
