OLYMPIA - The traditional family driving vacation may take a toll on mom and dad's nerves, but it doesn't necessarily have to take a toll on the environment.
Some basic car maintenance before you head for Washington's scenic highways will not only save money, but also protect the environment.
"You can help keep Washington beautiful for future vacationers by spending a little time on your car now," said Linda Hoffman, director of the Department of Ecology.
Having a properly tuned engine improves gas mileage, which saves money and reduces tailpipe emissions by more than half, said Hoffman.
Repairing oil and transmission leaks reduces the amount of polluted runoff entering lakes and streams and keeps the water clean for swimming, boating and fishing.
Used oil should be taken to an oil recycler. The oil from a single oil change can ruin one million gallons of water.
Since oil doesn't wear out, a recycler can remove the dirt and the oil can be re-used over and over again. For information on where to take used oil for recycling, call 800-RECYCLE.
Washing a car over gravel or grass will help make sure the soapy water doesn't go into the storm drain, since storm drains feed directly into lakes and streams.
Using a litter bag in the car also is a good idea. It not only keeps Washington's scenery beautiful, but also helps drivers avoid hefty fines for littering.
