East-side environmental "good guys" celebrated in Spokane

SPOKANE - Two Eastern Washington facilities that just received Washington's highest honor for preventing pollution will be honored at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at The Davenport Hotel, 10 S. Post Street, in Spokane.

Earlier this week, Fairchild Air Force Base and the Columbia Plateau Producers received the Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention & Sustainable Practices during a ceremony in Olympia - and The Davenport Hotel wants to host a local recognition event for the Spokane-area winners.

The media are invited to attend and cover the event on Tuesday. Representatives from the award-winning companies will be available for interviews.

Seven awards were presented statewide. All of the winners have used innovation to serve customers, offer services and make products in ways that also reduce or eliminate hazardous waste and conserve Washington's resources, such as energy and water. The winners also were honored for using "sustainable" business practices that support the vitality of the economy, the environment and the community.

The Davenport Hotel is hosting the Eastern Washington event to honor the hotel's own grain provider, the Columbia Plateau Producers of Reardon. The Columbia Plateau Producers are providing the community with eco-friendly, socially responsible and locally-grown farm products.

The company uses "direct seeding," which allows the farmer to reduce fuel usage. The soil does not move off the farm, so soil, water and air pollution all are reduced.

Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane is one of the largest refueling wings in the Air Force, with 60 active-duty and Air National Guard aircraft. The base has reduced its use of hazardous materials by more than 93 percent and its energy consumption by more than 33 percent.
