Spill-response drill near Edmonds tomorrow

OLYMPIA - The state Department of Ecology (Ecology), U.S. Coast Guard and other participants will conduct a spill-response practice exercise in Puget Sound off Edmonds and Point Wells tomorrow, Nov. 9.

The drill is part of a regularly-scheduled program and is not related to the recent Dalco Passage oil spill.

Crews will place fluorescent dye in the water to practice monitoring oil in the water. An oil skimmer from the Clean Sound Cooperative and three other boats will be on the water. However, the drill is only a monitoring exercise, and there will be no booms or skimming activity.

Other participants include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the University of Washington and Polaris Applied Science, an environmental consulting firm.

The boats will release dye into the water at approximately 9 a.m., but this may be hard to observe or photograph from land because the boats will be too far away from shore.

Reporters and photographers can arrange to have access to some of the drill participants who can explain the exercise and demonstrate equipment when they take their mid-day break. Please contact Larry Altose, Ecology public information, by 10 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 9) if you are interested.
