Public meeting set on Scott Paper site proposal

BELLEVUE - The Department of Ecology (Ecology) will conduct a public meeting early next month on a proposed temporary project to stop shoreline erosion at the former Scott Paper mill site in Anacortes.

During a recent comment period on a draft interim action work plan for the project, citizens requested that Ecology hold a public meeting. The public comment period has been extended to Jan. 10. The meeting will take place on Jan. 4, 2005, at the Municipal Building (City Hall), 6th Street and Q Avenue in Anacortes, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Port of Anacortes owns the northern half of the former mill site and is evaluating contamination on the property and potential long-term cleanup options. Meanwhile, shoreline erosion threatens to wash debris and potentially contaminated soil into Fidalgo Bay.

The port proposes to stabilize about 150 feet of shoreline by installing fabric sheeting, held in place by rocks and gravel. The project is temporary and can be removed if long-term cleanup and future property re-development plans call for a different shoreline design.
